The A4's 4th generation runs from 2008 to 2015.
Audi's EA888 2.0-liter engine suffers from loose timing chains that can rattle, make the car hard to start, and eventually lead to catastophic engine failure. The problem is likely due to a failure of the timing tensioner which makes sure the chain is properly wound to the pulleys and gears.

Volkswagen, Audi's parent company, said owners shoudn't have to worry about timing chain maintenance for 120,000 miles. That probably came as a shock to some owners that had their fail around 64,000 miles.

The good news is a series of lawsuits eventually led to an warranty settlement which extended that car's new vehicle limited warranty to help cover the repairs.

While not as common, complaints about a bad piston are worth mentioning. Especially given their extremely costly repair costs.

Some 4th generation 2.0T engines can have a piston come loose and shatter the piston skirt. These engine aren't incredibly old worn either, with multiple complaints happening before the engine hits 70,000 miles. That's well beyond the warranty period and to date Audi has not offered any assitance with this problem.

The real kicker is how the problem means you'll need to replace the engine to tune of $8,000+ dollars.

The 4th Generation A4 Summary ∞

Is the 4th generation A4 a bad car? Absolutely not. But it isn't perfect and it'll likely cost you a lot of money to maintain even though some of the engine issues have been addressed with extended warranty offers.

A couple years ago the 2007-2012 Q7 and 2009-2012 Q5 were recalled to fix leaking fuel pump flanges. At the time, there weren't enough replacement flanges to go around.
Turns out if the flange has already been exposed to outside contaminates, covering it in tape will only prolong the inevitable leak.
The alleged device is hidden within the transmission control module (TCM) and uses a "warm up" mode that uses significantly less fuel and power, and therefore creates less CO2 emissions. It's perfect for those pesky emissions tests.

And methinks owners are going to be Scrooge McDuck levels of happy.

Owners of the 2009-2012 Audi Q7 3.0L diesel will be eligible for buyback offers between $26,000 to $58,000, depending on model year and mileage.

"In 2015 and 2016, Audi learned of incidents involving overheating in the engine compartments, so an investigation was opened in 2016 to track down the problem.
Here's something that doesn't happen every day.
According to the Judge, Audi's defense was reasoned. He agreed that:

All cars use oil and Audi did disclose oil consumption issues in their manual

A check engine warning light does come on when the oil is low to warn owners

Oil consumption is a maintenance issue and, therefore, can't be tied to a defect

Owners of the 2009-2011 Audi A4, 2010-2011 Audi A5, and the 2011 Audi Q5. The cars must have a "factory-installed 2.0L TFSI longitudinal engine CAEB" and have been sold or leased in the US or Puerto Rico.

100% reimbursement of parts and labor for any prior oil consumption repairs (with limits)

The "new vehicle limited warranty" will be extended to 8 years or 80,000 miles

Using gas for diesel engines would be like trying to replace my morning coffee with soy milk. Sure, I could swallow it but the result wouldn't be pretty. A little gas in a diesel engine will burn quickly and create a very low power output. A lot of gas in a diesel engine can cause the engine to blow or, you guessed it --- fuel pump to fail.

In 2013, VW started a service campaign to install bright yellow stickers near the gas cap to warn owners not to let this happen.

Gas Leaks Prompt Recall

Manufacturers can sometimes drag their feet when it comes to issuing recalls. But whenever there's reports of fuel leaking out of cars they start to move like someone lit a fire under their butt. That's because, well ... there might actually be real fires soon.

Last week Volkswagen -- parent company of Audi -- recalled 26,000 cars for fuel injectors that leak. Just a couple days later they expanded that recall to include an additional 45,000 cars.

Owners had been complaining about the smell of gas inside the cabin. VW traced the issue to a bad soldering job where the sealing cap meets the fuel rail and blames the problem on their supplier. Looks like someone's getting grounded.

For more information about the problem and the range of manufacturing dates this affects, visit CarComplaints.com. VW owners with specific questions can contact customer service at 800-822-8987 and give them recall number 24BL. Audi owners can call 800-822-2834 and reference recall 24AP.

Anyway, it turns out some things you don't know can hurt you and here's one example.

Earlier this year, Audi recalled 26,000 cars with fuel injectors that leak. Anytime there's a fuel leak near an ignition source, very bad things can happen. The recall was announced in January and should have begun on March 10th, 2015, but I wanted to make sure you knew about it ... because I care.

Audi says the fuel injector valve is out of position while driving in the following cars:

2011-12 Audi S4

2011-12 Audi S5

2011-12 Audi Q7

2012 Audi A6

2012 VW Touareg Hybrid

2012-2013 Audi A7

If you haven't received your recall notice or had your car fixed yet, you can call your local dealer or contact Audi at 800-822-2834 and refer to recall number 24AP (VW owners call 800-893-5298 and use recall 24BK).

Audi owners have long complained that their engines drink oil like a sailor at port. For years their concerns were shrugged off by Audi (and its parent company Volkswagen), but the recent settlement of a class-action lawsuit gives some owners new hope.

Extend the warranty from 4 years/50,000 miles to 8 years/80,000 miles.

Reimburse any affected owners who've already paid for previous repairs related to the oil problem.

Those who have not already paid for repairs will be entitled to a replacement of the crankcase pressure regulating valve, front crankshaft seal and front crankshaft bolt.
